How Should We Pray?

In my reading of A.W. Tozer, I ran across a statement that has caused me

to stop and think. He states that there are certain areas of seeking God's

guidance and His answers to our requests in which we we do not know how to pray.

Tozer explains that we sometimes ask God to bless us and then give us

what we want. Sometimes we pray this way, and it is not what He wants

for us.

He tells his readers that we should seek God's will and ask Him for

His desires for the circumstances we see around us and wish Him to change in our lives and the lives of the church.

This is a huge challenge for me. I have to study the situation and then think of how God sees it. Then I have to ask Him “if it is in Your will,” before I present my petitions.

Tozer also reminds us that God answers petitions that we ask in Jesus' Name.

I find these things fascinating. I definitely have tried to add these approaches to my praying to Him. There is one petition that I have made for quite some time. This past week, I received a phone call from our church office. The administrator told me that progress had been made on the situation about which I had been praying.

More to come, later.

  1. Yeah, Gods will, not mine. I often pray this Cecelia... May YOUR will be done. As in the Lord's prayer. Great post, thank you.

    1. Even Paul and Jesus had to seek God's will over theirs. Thank you for your thoughts. Be blessed/

  2. Prayer is testing; how close am I to God to know His mind. In material things it is "if the Lord will"; in spiritual things we know His will is to bless. Is Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:10 a good example for us?

    1. Thank you, David for referring me to Jabez. His prayer was God-focused. And God did bless him. Be blessed.

  3. God is always working behind the scenes, even when we think He must have forgotten our request or ideas. God's timing is always perfect, and that is something to always remember.

    1. I have a book on one of my shelves entitled, "God Works the Night Shift." It taught me thar He is working for us even when we don't realize it. After 18 months with an interim pastor, we have a new pastor coming tomorrow. It is a woman, and we are all excited to see this happen. Be blessed.
